I mwbaCryptobranchoidea (mwbqDunn, 1922)cite-ref-1[1] sono un mwcgsottordine di mwcwsalamandre diffuso in Asia, nella Russia europea e negli Stati Uniti. Sono noti come mwdasalamandre primitive, in contrasto con i mwdqSalamandroidea, definiti mwdgsalamandre evolute.cite-ref-2[2] Il gruppo comprende due suddivisioni viventi, i mwewCryptobranchidae (le mwfasalamandre giganti asiatiche e gli mwfqhellbender) e gli mwfgHynobiidae, comunemente noti come salamandre asiatiche.
Le salamandre giganti sono paedomorfe obbligate con una metamorfosi parziale,cite-ref-3[3] mentre le salamandre asiatiche completano una metamorfosi completa. Le uniche eccezioni note sono mwhaBatrachuperus londongensis, documentata come facoltativamente neotenica, e mwhgHynobius retardatus, per la quale una popolazione oggi ritenuta estinta del lago Kuttarush, nell’isola di Hokkaidō, mostrava caratteri neotenici come la presenza di branchie negli adulti.cite-ref-4[4]
I membri più antichi del gruppo sono noti dal Biota di Yanliao della Cina, risalente al mwjgGiurassico medio (mwjwBathoniano).cite-ref-0-5-0[5]
